In considering the current state of music in Japan, it is tremendously gratifying to note the extent to which music appreciation has increased among the public, leading Japan to become one of the most prominent markets for music in the world. It is encouraging to see many of our musicians active internationally and making remarkable achievements in a variety of competitions.
However, the focus of most international competitions has been limited to piano, violin and vocal performances. Lately, wind instruments have been featured in competitions. Yet, our Competition can be said to be the one and only full-scale competition that focuses solely on the oboe.
I consider the oboe as a very important instrument, that can even determine the quality of the entire orchestra. The sound of the oboe I heard in 1954 in Germany where I studied music was so beautiful and moving, that I realized the importance of this instrument. Up until then, in Japan, the oboe tended to be in the shadows of other instruments, with its true artistic value left unnoticed. Half a century later, the true artistic value of the oboe is still not yet justly evaluated, despite its essential role in the orchestra and unfathomable possibilities as both a solo and an ensemble instrument.
The aim of Sony Music Foundation is to promote the true artistic value of the oboe, and to introduce talented oboists to the larger world. We have been successfully hosting this Competition every three years since 1985, including the current 6th year. Every competition brings forth more and more talented musicians. We believe that this competition will be as successful as ever.
Finally, we would like to thank all of you who have shared our spirit of "contributing to international exchange and promoting the art of music" and also for your kind understanding, support and cooperation.
